CPUC Releases Its Proposed Decision On CSI-Thermal

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

California moved one step closer to a statewide incentive program for residential and commercial solar water heating last week with the release of Commissioner Peevey’s Proposed Decision recommending the creation of the CSI-Thermal Program by the California Public Utilities Commission.

The solar water heating incentive program was mandated by law in October of 2007 when Governor Schwarzenegger signed AB1470 which created the Solar Hot Water and Efficiency Act of 2007.   There has been a pilot program in place in San Diego since then and the final vote on the program is slated for December by the CPUC.

The new CSI – Thermal Program described in the Proposed Decision would set aside $305.8 million for direct financial incentives for consumers to install solar water heating systems and another $31.25 million for market facilitation.

SunWater Solar is pleased that the rebate program will soon be implemented which will help make it easier for people all over the state to install solar water heating systems.   By doing so, people can increase their use of renewable energy to heat water and at the same time cut down on their greenhouse gas emissions as well as their utility bills.

Solar Water Heating In Scientific American

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Hayes 2 Blog 1A blog about Solar Water Heating on the Scientific American website helps explain solar water heating technology.  It also points out near the end of the article that “some companies that used to install thermal systems, such as Borrego Solar, no longer do. Chris Anderson, Borrego’s chief technology officer, says that thermal and PV systems require contractors with different skills and juggling the two would be tricky.”

SunWater Solar agrees with that assessment which is why we specialize in solar water heating and solar thermal technology.   We don’t install PV systems and our team is focused exclusively on designing and installing solar thermal systems which sets us apart from other companies.

Renewable Funding’s PACE Program Lands Investment Funds

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

Renewable Funding has landed $12.2 Million in its first round of financing as it launches its PACE (Property Assessed Clean Energy) solar funding programs.   Renewable Funding is a company that handles the administration and financing of the PACE  programs that allow local municipalities to finance solar hot water systems through the property taxes of houses and businesses.

For more information on the program, see the blog entry on CleanTechnica.com.  SunWater Solar is glad to see the PACE solar funding programs move forward as a way for homeowners and business owners to finance their solar hot water systems.

Solar Training Program Featured In Solar Today

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

RichondBUILD: Alberto, Adrian, and DarrylSolar Today, the magazine of the American Solar Energy Society, recently wrote an article about Daryl Horne who has been gaining solar installation experience working transitional jobs at SunPower, SunWater Solar and now as an installer at SunEdison. Horne is a graduate of the 12-week RichmondBUILD Pre-Apprenticeship Construction Skills & Solar Installation Training program.

SunWater Solar was pleased to have Daryl work with us on our Richmond Firehouse #4 project that supplies solar heated domestic hot water to the fire station.

Sonoma County’s Energy Independence Program

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

Roof InstallationSonoma County’s Energy Independence Program is a new opportunity for property owners to finance energy efficiency, water efficiency and renewable energy improvements through a voluntary assessment. These assessments will be attached to the property, not the owner and will be paid back through the property tax system over time, making the program not only energy efficient but also affordable.

SunWater Solar is excited to see Sonoma County offering a way for businesses and homes to install solar hot water systems and have them paid off through the property taxes.

Sonoma County also has Solar Sonoma County which is a consortium of local governments, businesses and other local entities and individuals working collaboratively to identify and implement initiatives to promote, expand, and accelerate solar photovoltaic and solar thermal energy generation and energy efficiency throughout Sonoma County.

President Obama Signs Executive Order Setting Sustainability Goals

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

Demonstrating a commitment to lead by example, President Obama signed an Executive Order in October that sets sustainability goals for Federal agencies and focuses on making improvements in their environmental, energy and economic performance. The Executive Order requires Federal agencies to set a 2020 greenhouse gas emissions reduction target within 90 days; increase energy efficiency; and sets many other goals.

SunWater Solar believes that solar hot water will play a major part in this effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in federal facilities across the country.   With nearly 500,000 federal facilities nationwide, the federal government can play a major role in making the country more sustainable.

Recovery Through Retrofit

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

Vice President Joe Biden recently announced that the federal government will be creating a program called Recovery Through Retrofit that will assist local governments in setting up solar financing programs like the Berkeley First solar financing program.

Berkeley’s program eliminates the upfront cost of installing solar by setting up a tax district where the system is payed off over 20 years through the property taxes.  San Francisco is also setting up such a program and it is slated to roll out in early 2010.

SunWater Solar is pleased to see cities across California and the U.S. move toward this financing structure  as it will enable many more people to use the renewable energy of the sun to heat their water.

See  more information on the Recovery Through Retrofit Program in an article from the San Francisco Chronicle.

Palo Alto Solar Hot Water Rebate Program

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

The City of Palo Alto is one of the first communities in the state of California to have a solar hot water rebate program.  Because the city owns it’s own utilities, it is following the mandate of AB 1470 which requires natural gas utilities to offer solar hot water rebate programs.

SunWater Solar is an approved contractor for the City of Palo Alto Solar Water Heating Program and is one of the first companies to have installations in both the residential program and commercial program.
