SunWater Solar to Participate in City of San Jose Employee Solar Group Buy Program

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

As announced today by the San Jose Credit Union, a first-of-its-kind solar group buy program has put low-cost solar thermal into the hands of 130 San Jose employees and retirees. This group buy program is unique because it is the first such program in the U.S. that allows members of an organization – rather than residents of a specific neighborhood or city – to purchase residential solar thermal (or PV) systems at a group discount. Group buy participants are eligible for low interest solar loans from the Credit Union and pre-negotiated discounts on solar systems from specific vendors, including SunWater Solar. Homeowners are also eligible for substantial federal and state solar rebates that further lower the cost of the systems.

SunWater Solar is proud to be the solar thermal vendor of choice for the San Jose Employee Solar Group Buy program. We look forward to bringing the benefits of solar thermal to program participants!

New Solar Water Heater Rebate from the CEC

Sunday, August 1st, 2010

Solar hot water is now a better deal than ever thanks to the California Energy Commission (CEC). On July 28 the CEC announced an expansion of the Cash for Appliances rebate program, which offers incentives for solar water heaters. Beginning July 29, consumers who purchase a qualifying solar water heater, apply within 120 days of the purchase and properly recycle their old water heater will be eligible for a $300-$750 rebate. Consumers or contractors can submit the rebate application, with the consumer receiving the check in six to eight weeks. Rebates are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, and will last until funds are exhausted.

SunWater Solar welcomes the CEC’s efforts to increase adoption of energy-efficient solar water heaters. The CEC rebate can be combined with the California Solar Initiative (CSI) Thermal rebate and the 30% federal tax credit available to home and business owners who purchase a new system. Rebates are now at their highest level, but these incentives won’t last forever. Now is the time to invest in a new solar thermal system! To learn more, click here.

GreenFinanceSF Program Launches

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

San Francisco has officially launched the GreenFinanceSF program which allows businesses and homeowners to finance solar thermal systems through a special assessment on their property tax.   The $150 million loan program is the largest PACE (Property Assessed Clean Energy) program in the country and allows financing of solar and other energy efficiency projects with little upfront cost as the program is financed on the property tax over a number of years.

One of the requirements of the program is that buildings must have basic energy efficiency measures implemented before solar electricity projects (PV) can be funded.   Solar water heating is considered one of these energy efficiency measures and can help a building reach the energy efficiency requirements needed to install PV solar for electricity.

SunWater Solar applauds the efforts of San Francisco in leading the country with its new PACE program.

GreenFinanceSF Approved By Mayor Newsom

California Solar Initiative Thermal Program Authorizes $350 Million in Incentives

Rebate Program Expected to Ignite Solar Thermal Market in California, where SunWater Solar is an Established Leader

SAN FRANCISCO and RICHMOND, Calif. – January 25, 2010 – The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) last week approved the California Solar Initiative (CSI) Thermal Program, which authorizes $350 million in rebates for businesses and individuals that install solar thermal systems. The program will energize the state’s solar thermal market by making it cheaper and easier for businesses and property owners to purchase solar thermal systems.

“These systems can be cost-effective for ratepayers, while helping to displace both electricity and natural gas usage in new and existing homes and businesses,” said Commissioner Dian M. Grueneich of the CPUC. “Thus a focused, cost-effective program to improve the market for this technology can serve as a key step in our path to zero net energy.”

Solar thermal systems use the sun’s energy, rather than fossil fuels, to heat water and other fluids. Professionally installed systems can significantly reduce site-generated greenhouse gas emissions and enable long-term ROI through decreased utility bills. Solar thermal systems are ideal investments for businesses and facilities that require large quantities of hot water or other fluids, such as multifamily dwellings, industrial facilities and swimming pools.

“The solar thermal rebate program is fantastic news for businesses that want to heat water cheaply and go green at the same time,” said Justin Weil, a nationally known expert on solar thermal and president of leading U.S. solar thermal company SunWater Solar. “To maximize a system’s ROI though, businesses need a knowledgeable partner with the experience to know what type of solar thermal system will best meet their requirements.”

With a certified, experienced staff and a solid record of improving the bottom line for commercial clients, SunWater Solar can manage every phase of a solar thermal implementation, from value analysis, to system design, to system installation and maintenance. Because SunWater Solar focuses exclusively on solar thermal technology, the company can provide comprehensive support to businesses implementing solar thermal technology for a wide variety of applications, including domestic hot water, process heating and pool heating.

In addition to the $350 million in rebates authorized by the CSI Thermal Program, there are a variety of other financial incentives and structures in place that encourage solar thermal adoption, both within California and throughout the United States. These rebates, tax benefits and financing options include:

  • Power Purchase Agreements (PPA), in which a third party funds the installation of a solar thermal system and the client pays a reduced rate for utilities
  • The Investment Tax Credit (ITC), a 30% federal tax credit
  • Under the federal Modified Accelerated Cost-Recovery System (MACRS), qualified businesses may recover investments in solar thermal through depreciation deductions
  • Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) programs, which allow municipalities to offer financing for solar thermal systems through property taxes
  • Financing is available from lenders who offer solar loans with no money down and low interest rates
  • Rebates offered by many state and local governments

SunWater Solar is pleased to see the SF2 program move forward.  The financing package will help more business and home owners install solar water heating systems to reduce greenhouse gasses and cut down on energy bills.

Solar Water Heating To Be Funded Through Oakland Property Tax Bills

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

Oakland, CA is joining other municipalities to offer financing for solar water heating projects through property tax bills.   This financing will be available for both commercial and residential installations and will allow property owners to pay for the solar water heating system over a 20 or 30 year period avoiding the upfront cost of the system installation.

Renewable Funding will be administering the program under the California First program which is one of many PACE (Property Assessed Clean Energy) funding programs the company is offering.

Solar Water Heating For Hotels

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

There are a growing number of hotels across the US that are going green and doing their part to reduce their carbon footprint.  One of the best ways for hotels and other places of lodging to go green is by using the renewable energy of the sun to heat their water.   Because hotels typically use a  large amount of hot water, solar water heating systems are a perfect match for their needs and the number of hotels moving to solar water heating systems is growing everyday all across the country.

SunWater Solar specializes in commercial solar water heating systems and can work with hotels, motels, and inns across California to go solar to heat their water.   As energy prices increase,  rebates and tax credits grow more common, and financing programs come on line, we expect to see many more hotel guests enjoying hot water provided by the sun.

Sonoma County’s Energy Independence Program

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

Roof InstallationSonoma County’s Energy Independence Program is a new opportunity for property owners to finance energy efficiency, water efficiency and renewable energy improvements through a voluntary assessment. These assessments will be attached to the property, not the owner and will be paid back through the property tax system over time, making the program not only energy efficient but also affordable.

SunWater Solar is excited to see Sonoma County offering a way for businesses and homes to install solar hot water systems and have them paid off through the property taxes.

Sonoma County also has Solar Sonoma County which is a consortium of local governments, businesses and other local entities and individuals working collaboratively to identify and implement initiatives to promote, expand, and accelerate solar photovoltaic and solar thermal energy generation and energy efficiency throughout Sonoma County.

Recovery Through Retrofit

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

Vice President Joe Biden recently announced that the federal government will be creating a program called Recovery Through Retrofit that will assist local governments in setting up solar financing programs like the Berkeley First solar financing program.

Berkeley’s program eliminates the upfront cost of installing solar by setting up a tax district where the system is payed off over 20 years through the property taxes.  San Francisco is also setting up such a program and it is slated to roll out in early 2010.

SunWater Solar is pleased to see cities across California and the U.S. move toward this financing structure  as it will enable many more people to use the renewable energy of the sun to heat their water.

See  more information on the Recovery Through Retrofit Program in an article from the San Francisco Chronicle.
