On August 6, the California Public Utilities Commission officially announced a decision to increase the value of CSI-Thermal rebates for solar water heating systems. Tier one multi-family/commercial CSI-Thermal rebates were increased by 13.33%, raising the rebate from $12.82 to $14.53 per therm offset. The increase is the result of a petition from CALSEIA (California Solar Energy Industries Association).

This rebate increase is excellent news for commercial and industrial organizations in California that are considering whether now is the time to invest in solar water heating technology. When combined with federal tax credits and financial tools such as a Power Purchase Agreement or lease, the higher rebate makes solar thermal an extremely attractive financial proposition for buildings and facilities with a high hot water load. For these building types, solar thermal can be a highly cost-effective way to lower energy costs while also reducing site-generated greenhouse gases.

The CSI-Thermal rebate increase coincides with a massive state-wide marketing campaign that has been rolled out to increase awareness of solar water heating technology. The marketing campaign, the rebate increase and the growing emphasis on green building could be just the combination needed to ignite California’s solar water-heating market.
