We at SunWater have been closely following the national campaign to encourage President Obama to install solar technology at the White House. The campaign achieved a milestone today when the White House announced plans to install both solar hot water and solar PV systems by spring 2011.

A solar hot water system did grace the White House roof during the Carter administration, but the panels were permanently removed during the Reagan administration when the roof underwent repairs. The removal of the panels came to symbolize a shift in policy: the withdrawal of federal support for renewable energy. But today’s White House announcement shows that solar thermal is once again getting some much-deserved attention from those at the highest levels of government.

President Obama’s new solar hot water system will garner some excellent, sorely needed publicity for the solar thermal industry. In the U.S., solar PV is widely known, and its benefits widely appreciated. Solar thermal, on the other hand, is in serious need of a massive public information campaign explaining the technology and its benefits. We hope that the White House’s new solar thermal system will cast the spotlight on this vital source of renewable energy for 21st century American homes and businesses.
